Chix Fax Chicopee Georgia

The Chicopee Village off Atlanta Highway in Gainesville Georgia (Hall County)was built in the mid 1920s as a mill town built for Johnson and Johnson and designed by Earle Sumner Draper. It was orignally sited on 3500 acres that included the County Home and Farm as well as many other farms. The community consists of about 210 homes and it is currently surrounded by 2500 acres of greenspace called the Chicopee Woods Area Park. Included in the Park is the Chicopee Woods Golf Course and the Elachee Nature Center with biking and hiking trails.

Chicopee is on the National Register of Historic Places and is possibly one of the nicest and best preserved garden mill towns in the Southeast. All of the homes are 4 sides brick and have 9 foot ceilings and hardwood floors with multiple coal burning fireplaces. They are made of plaster walls and wide pine interior trim with solid 5 panel doors. The original windows are double hung and utilize the counter weight system. The exterior of all the homes is classis craftsman bungalow style. The homes were built with gutters that were piped to the streets and underground power and water utilites. Most of the lots are between a quarter and a third of an acre.
